The Palisades restart project reached a watershed moment as the last of the major projects were successfully closed out and the site transitioned from large-scale activities to the remaining routine maintenance, testing, inspection, and operational readiness work required before startup.
Holtec Palisades has successfully completed passivation of its primary system, which is an essential step to ensure long-term equipment reliability and a key milestone in the ongoing effort to return the plant to service.
We will remember 2025 as the year when Holtec’s SMR-300 nuclear reactor program notched pivotal breakthroughs that will accelerate its adoption and deployment around the world in this decade and beyond.
We are delighted and honored to have been selected as a recipient of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Tier 1 “First Mover Team Support” award under the U.S. Government’s Generation III+ Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Pathway to Deployment Program.
The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township, Michigan, has received new nuclear fuel – 68 assemblies in total – achieving a major milestone on the path to restarting the plant.
With the financial and technology predicates resolved, Holtec is poised to build the first two SMR-300 reactors most likely to be America’s first, alongside the Palisades Energy plant in Michigan.
On August 25, 2025, the Palisades Power Plant in Covert Township, Michigan, officially transitioned from decommissioning to operations status under the oversight of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In a major milestone for the U.S. nuclear industry, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has formally approved Holtec’s request to transition the Palisades Nuclear Plant from decommissioning status back to an operating license.
Holtec’s Palisades Nuclear Power Plant continues to move steadily toward restart, with major progress in physical refurbishment, Operator training, and positive feedback from independent nuclear industry reviewers.
