In a signing ceremony in London on December 17, 2019, EDF Energy’s Managing Director of Generation Mr. Matt Sykes hosted the signing of a Long-Term Agreement with Holtec International for the supply of casks and loading campaign services for Sizewell B.
On June 15, 2017, EDF Energy marked the successful completion of its 1st spent fuel loading campaign and a state-of-the-art new dry store at Sizewell B-UK’s first. The dry store uses Holtec’s double wall multi-purpose canisters and HI-STORM MIC casks.
On March 13, 2017, the UK's first dry storage cask was placed inside Sizewell B's Dry Fuel Storage Building at its designated location. The cask, known as HI-STORM MIC (the acronym MIC stands for Mega-Impact Capable), designed by Holtec in close cooperation with EDF Energy for a 100-year design life, was manufactured at Holtec's Pittsburgh, PA plant.
EDF Energy is inaugurating the United Kingdom’s first dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, allowing the continued safe operation of Sizewell B to at least 2035 and with the possibility of a further 20 year life extension.
We are pleased to announce that Great Britain's only PWR- Sizewell B- has received agreement from the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) to begin the inactive commissioning process (called "dry runs" in the U.S.) to prove out the dry storage implementation steps.
