USNRC Conducts Extensive Public Consultation Concerning Holtec’s Environmental Report on HI-STORE CISF – America’s sole Consolidated Interim Storage Facility under Regulatory Review

Holtec International has launched the licensing of an autonomous consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) in southeastern New Mexico. The facility, named HI-STORE CISF, will provide a significant step on the path to resolve the nation’s long standing used nuclear fuel storage issue by providing a safe, secure, temporary, retrievable, and centralized facility for storage of used nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste. The HI-STORE CISF seeks to fulfill the goal to aggregate the used nuclear fuel canisters presently scattered across the country at dozens of independent used fuel storage installations into one suitable location, in preparation for future relocation to a final repository. The license application for the HI-STORE CISF was submitted to the USNRC on March 31, 2017 and accepted by the USNRC in February 2018 (USNRC Docket No. 72-1051). Another HI-STAR Transport Cask Wins International Competition

The winning HI-STAR 100MB cask also completes Holtec’s fleet of transport casks for relocation of used fuel from decentralized storage facilities to the HI-STORE Central Interim Storage (CIS) Facility

We are pleased to report that HI-STAR 100MB [USNRC docket # 71-9378], designed to serve as a workhorse to transport hundreds of multi-purpose canisters in storage across the US to the consolidated interim storage facility, HI-STORE CIS, in New Mexico has won the international competition for deployment in China. As reported in the website (www.chinabidding.com), China’s premier nuclear energy owner/developer, ranked HI-STAR 100MB, as #1 in its evaluation of cask technologies for its domestic needs. HI-STAR 100-MB’s selection by China follows the long tradition of preference for the HI-STAR brand by our sophisticated overseas customers. In addition to domestic acceptance, earlier HI-STAR models and their overseas users are: HI-STAR 100 (Spain & South Africa), HI-STAR 63 (South Korea), HI-STAR 60 (China), HI-STAR 180 (Switzerland), HI-STAR 180D (Belgium), HI-STAR 180L (Switzerland), HI-STAR 80 (Sweden), HI-STAR 190 (Ukraine), HI-STAR 150 (Spain), and HI-STAR ATB1T (Sweden). Ameren’s Callaway Uses the HI-STORM UMAX System to Store Used Nuclear Fuel

First conceived after the shock of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Holtec’s record of storing used nuclear fuel in a retrievable configuration below-the-ground is now 12 years old. In 2006, Humboldt Bay became the first plant to feature subterranean storage, which is so unobtrusive and produces such negligible dose that the path to the beach runs in close proximity to the ISFSI! The HI-STAR transportation systems stored at Humboldt are ready for shipment any time.

Energoatom and Holtec Sign Historic Memorandum to Build SMR-160 Plants in Ukraine

We are pleased to announce that Holtec International and NAEK Energoatom, Ukraine's national nuclear operator, have signed a Memorandum-of-Understanding that envisages Ukraine to adopt the SMR-160 technology to meet its projected needs for clean power in the latter half of the next decade.
