About

The Palisades nuclear plant was originally built between 1969 and 1971, and commissioned for service in December 1971, during the height of initial U.S. commercial nuclear expansion. For more than five decades, the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant provided reliable, safe power to Michigan and the greater Midwest. At the time of shutdown operated in the highest performance category of the NRC.

The plant consists of a single unit pressurized water reactor (PWR) rated to produce approximately 805 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 800,000 homes. As a producer of carbon-free energy, every year the plant prevented 4.7 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 900,000 cars off the road.

During operation Palisades provides more than 600 high-paying jobs to the local community. The plant also supports 1,000+ specialty workers during the plant’s scheduled refueling and maintenance outages, providing an additional stimulus to the local economy.

Palisades Leadership

Nuclear Safety Review Board

The Nuclear Safety Review Board (NSRB) serves as an independent, high-level oversight body at a nuclear power plant, responsible for objectively evaluating plant operations, safety performance, and regulatory compliance. Composed of senior technical experts and executives from both within and outside the operating organization, the board conducts periodic reviews and audits that transcend day-to-day management pressures.

The work performed by the NSRB involves examining nuclear safety culture, reviewing significant operational events or equipment failures, evaluating proposed design changes or license amendments, and assessing the effectiveness of corrective action programs. By providing an unvarnished, macro-level assessment of nuclear safety trends directly to senior executive leadership, the NSRB acts as a critical line of defense to prevent complacency, ensure robust risk management, and maintain the highest standards of public and operational safety.
