Yes, Holtec utilizes nuclear science expertise for reactor segmentation. Nuclear scientists calculate the neutron bombardment on the different elevations of the reactor during its operating life very precisely. For this purpose, experimentally validated computer codes are used. This enables Holtec to segregate the reactor vessel parts by their radioactivity content helping to minimize the quantity of highly activated waste.
