Thomas Haynes is a manufacturing expert and an inventor of advanced materials for innovative technologies. He currently serves as an emeritus vice president of Nanometal Technologies at Holtec International.

Professional History

Haynes began working in the manufacturing industry starting in 1970. At Garrett Air-Research Casting Company, he served as a tooling/pattern maker, manufacturing all production tooling for the rubber integral pattern process for the turbo charger industry. As a process technician, Haynes worked in the research and development department, developing titanium investment casting, single crystal air foils and the Air-Refrac super alloy casting process.

In 1979, Haynes became a process engineer at Rex Precision Products, Inc. and was responsible for the investment casting process from blueprint to final inspection. He quickly moved up through the ranks, first as a corporate engineer documenting all process procedures, raw material specifications and process development for casting plants, to vice president of engineering, where he was responsible for all engineers and quality assurance staff for five casting plants.

In 1987, Haynes founded California Consolidated Technology, a family-owned business manufacturing METAMIC, a reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites using a cold isostatic press and vacuum sinter power metal technology. Haynes ran the company for nearly eight years until Reynolds Metals Company purchased a five-year license agreement to use METAMIC. The technology was approved for commercial use as a neutron absorber for the storage of spent nuclear fuel.

In 2002, Haynes became president and chief executive officer of METAMIC LLC, where he set up production equipment and processes to manufacture METAMIC sheet products for spent nuclear fuel storage.

In 2008, Haynes joined Holtec International as an executive vice president, where he redeveloped METAMIC to METAMIC HT, a high temperature version of the material. He also established a vertically integrated manufacturing plant in Orrville, Ohio called Orrvilon to manufacture these products.

Education

Haynes received an associate degree in Industrial Pattern Making from Santa Monic College (1974) and an associate degree in Metallurgy from El Camino College (1979).

Industry Leadership

Throughout his career, Haynes has developed eight U.S. patents in the field of aluminum composites, which have supported the growth of the METAMIC aluminum metal matrix composites technology.
