CVN Dismantlement Partners, LLC is a joint venture between Holtec Government Services and Aptim Federal Services, LLC (APTIM). Its mission is to safely dismantle and dispose of U.S. Navy nuclear powered warships using the latest technologies, methodologies, and approaches from civilian and defense industries.
Together with their teaming partner SA Recycling of Brownsville, Texas, CVN Dismantlement Partners is committed to bringing long-term value to Brownsville and surrounding communities. CVN Dismantlement Partners will accomplish this in part by establishing necessary training centers and facilities to support the safe and efficient dismantlement and disposal of the ex-Enterprise and future Nimitz class aircraft carriers. The unique and industry-leading expertise and experience of Holtec and APTIM make CVN Dismantlement Partners well-positioned to successfully dismantle and dispose of the Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the former USS Enterprise.
About the Partners
Holtec Government Services is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Holtec International and can leverage all the resources and capabilities its parent company can offer. Holtec Government Services provides services to federal, state, and municipal governments in national defense and carbon-free energy technologies including nuclear, solar, and thermal energy storage.
Holtec International is the world leader in the design and manufacturing of custom equipment to support the energy industry and the U.S. government. Holtec is America’s largest domestic supplier and largest exporter of capital equipment supporting the nuclear power industry, with contracts at over 80 commercial nuclear power plants in the U.S. Holtec is also America’s leader in the dismantlement and disposal (D&D) of commercial nuclear power plant with D&D activities in progress at four Holtec-owned nuclear reactors. Each project is in compliance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and state regulations. With over $2.5 billion of decommissioning work completed, Holtec has successfully achieved key milestones ahead of schedule with reduced worker dose, including the packaging of over 9,000 spent fuel assemblies in Holtec-designed and manufactured dry cask storage systems; the segmentation and packaging of internals from four reactor vessels with specialized cutting equipment in optimized transport packages designed and fabricated by Holtec; and the safe packaging, transportation, and disposal of 13,000 tons of low-level waste.
With decades of experience, Aptim Federal Services, LLC (APTIM) provides comprehensive radiological support, consulting services, and decontamination and demolition of facilities and components contaminated with radioactive, toxic, and hazardous waste materials. For every project, the environmental and resilience solutions firm customizes plans that adhere to relevant regulations, such as 10 CFR, EPA guidance, and NRC license termination rules. APTIM offers a wide range of services for power plants, ships, and industrial facilities with a focus on the protection of their clients, their communities, and the environment.
Through detailed and complex engineering and planning, APTIM systematically dismantled, sized, and packaged the U.S. Navy Surface Ship Support Barge (SSSB) for shipment. APTIM sent more than 8,000 tons of waste material to a licensed disposal facility and recycled more than 400 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This was a first-of-its-kind project that used a unique interagency agreement between Naval Sea Systems Command and the U.S. NRC to facilitate the Navy performing this work in the commercial sector. APTIM not only completed the project safely and by deadline but also brought significant economic development to the surrounding community for labor, tooling, supplies, housing/lodging, and other subcontracted services.
