José A. Gago serves as the General Manager and CEO of ANAV, the operator of 3 PWR 1,000 MWe nuclear reactors (Ascó 1 & 2 and Vandellós II) at 2 sites in Tarragona (Spain), since May 2012, after joining ANAV in 2009, initially as its Fuel Manager, later on as the Quality Group Manager. 

José has been ANAV’s Governor at the WANO Paris Centre Governing Board since 2012 and in June 2020 was elected as its Chairman, thereby representing the Centre at the World Association of Nuclear Operators Main Governing Board. He has been President of the Spanish Nuclear Society in 2017 and 2018, is a member of the Foro Nuclear Board of Directors since 2013 and serves as an advisor to the JANSI International Advisory Committee since March 2020.

He joined the Spanish utility ENDESA, part of the ENEL group, as the Engineering and Nuclear Fuel Cycle Deputy Director in 2008. He was in charge of uranium procurement, front-end and back-end strategies and contracts and the supervision of main engineering projects for ENDESA’s nuclear fleet. 

José holds an MSc in Energy and Nuclear Technologies Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, where, after his graduation in 1982, he spent over 6 years as an Associate Professor in fluid mechanics and as a Researcher in the fields of nuclear fusion and plasma hydrodynamics.
